Hinsdale South opened their season against Romeoville at home, well a temporary home at Hinsdale Centrals facility as a new turf field for the Hornets wasn’t fully completed for their home opener. The field may not have been ready to play but the Hornets was their offense exploded scoring 41 points on Romeoville’s defense in. Hinsdale’s junior running back tandem of Keonte Hall and Kaylen Williams made the Spartan defense look bad, Williams ripped off touchdown runs of 44, 6 and 71 yards allowing the Hornets to stay one step ahead of the Spartans all night. South’s quarterback senior Jackson Panice hooked up with senior Chris Chacko moments after a Spartan score in the third quarter with an 80 yard bomb that seem to take the wind out of Spartan sails.

If there is a silver lining for the Spartans, fans will look to the play of senior tailback Josh Griffin who carried the ball 23 times for the Romeoville racking up 153 yards and a score on the evening. Romeoville’s three year starter senior quarterback Matt Gillis also racked up yardage on the ground in the backfield as the stud QB scrambled like morning eggs to buy enough time to pass for 202 yards on an 11-18, three touchdown evening including a 71 yard strike to senior Wayne Fitts that temporarily put the Spartans ahead in the 2nd quarter 18-14. The Achilles heel for Romeoville besides their lack of defense had to be the yellow flags flying that cost them more than 100 yards in penalties in the 41-32 loss.

For Romeoville, the loss is the first season opener that 3rd year Coach Jeff Kuna has come up on the short end and after the game it was clear he wasn’t happy with the outcome. With playoffs as a goal for both teams, their non conference schedule is crucial in making those goals a reality. For Hinsdale South, the win gets their season off in the right direction after a difficult 2-6 season in 2009.
