ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Week one always brings some interesting match ups but if your headed to Downers Grove South in your opener…better bring you’re a game. The Mustangs invited South Elgin to their dance floor and spun them around early and often. Downers sophomore defensive back Josh Belt jumped on a fumble to stop Elgin’s opening drive and then drove the ball 94 yards largely on the legs of tailback Josh Williams who capped the drive with a one yard plunge and an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Williams was sensational in his varsity season debut rushing for a career high 340 yards and three scores. The Storm tightened their defense and then capped a five play 50-yard drive on a 6-yard bootleg touchdown by quarterback Zachary Gross with 8:16 left in the games opening half. South drove 80-yards on their next possession and Williams again scored from 3-yards out with 2:12 left to play in the half and went into the locker room with a 14-7 lead.

In the second half it was all South or should I say all Williams, as our field reporter Big Tone said, Williams looked like Eric Dickerson out there running with finesse and power to boot. Williams scored on an 8-yard run early in the fourth rounding out his day. The final score came from Notre Dame bound senior tight end Scott Daly brought in a 9 yard pass from Mustang quarterback AJ “Simon Says” Simoncelli for the 28-7 win starting off on their season on the right foot.
