There was a cyclone brewing at Joliet's Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon for a IHSA 5A showdown of two storied football programs but it was the Joliet Hilltoppers that tamed the winds. Springfield Sacred Heart cam into the game undefeated this season but the Cyclones could not stop the rushing attack of the dynamic duo in Joliet's 49-7 drubbing of Springfield advancing to the state championship game.

With winds reaching gusts of over 40 mph, Joliet won the toss and deferred kicking with the wind pinning the Cyclones offense near their own end zone and used the wind as the Hilltoppers twelfth man, the Joliet defense did the rest forcing punts on every drive in the first quarter and built a 14-0 lead after quarterback Craig Slowik threw a beautiful 53-yard strike to tight end Isaac Grashoff midway through the first and that proved to be enough but Joliet was just getting started.

The wind wreaked havoc for the Cyclones spread offense but was had little effect on JCA's wing offense. Junior back Ty Isaac racked up 214 yards on 18 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 8, 22, 49 and 53 yards while his senior counterpart Malin Jones ran like a man possessed using his stiff arm and a superhero like balance to blast through cyclone defenders rushing for 210 yards on 18 carries and a pair of scores in perhaps his best performance all season. Jones also made his presence felt on special teams flying to the ball and making tackles. Joliet will now attempt to win an Illinois best 14th state championship next weekend in the IHSA 5A championship contest against 6th seeded Montini in a rematch of their 2009 game in which the Bronco's bested the Hilltoppers. The game will be played at Memorial Stadium in Champagne at 10am Saturday.
