I spent part of my weekend perfecting my "Tebow" as we continued to clear off our driveway and sidewalks of the snow that dumped on us last week and upon tossing the last shovel full, I thanked my God for getting through it without falling over or slipping on the black ice and breaking something. While not intentionally putting on a show for anyone, a car drove by and honked the horn then yelled out the window GO BRONCOS!
All season, analysts have broken down Denver Bronco quarterback Tim Tebow's game play and most have all taken shots at his ability to perform at the highest level. I cannot personally recall another professional football player that has had this much scrutiny on his performance each week and leads me to wonder why?
There was a skit recently on the Jimmy Fallon show which aired last week on NBC with in a parity that used a David Bowie song. Fallon sung as if a dialogue were taking place between Tim Tebow and Jesus Christ to the tune of Bowie’s song “Space Oddity” (lyrics below). While meant to amuse, it is another example of poking fun at an athlete that stands for what he believes is right.
Instead of doing an end zone dance that resembles counting money, flexing their muscles, dunking a football over a goal post or crowd diving in an attempt to bring more glory to themselves, Tebow drops to a knee and gives thanks to his God. For that act, we should single him out as a society and make him the butt end of tasteless jokes and ridicule his actions as offensive. To be honest, I personally feel society as a whole has lost its center and we are paying the price for our failure to hold onto the moral good. Take a good look around, is "Tebow-ing" such a bad thing?
While I am far from perfect, I have no problem admitting I need heroes to look up to. Men and woman who lead by example and remind me that while the path to good is often covered and difficult to find at times, there is a path. I give thanks for people like Tim Tebow whose actions have inspired me to follow their lead. There are plenty of heroes if one only takes the time to look and while they may not be on an international stage, the effect their positive actions have on society multiply through the lives they touch.
We speak of the moral good yet we often fail to recognize those people in our lives that lead with that inner compass. Who is Tim Tebow? Well for me he is just another person who fears that what we cannot see more than that which we can. Not a bad way to live if you ask me and I am happy to own a Bronco jersey with his number plastered on it.
