Giving Thanks!

It is Thanksgiving week and I hope that all of you will be able to spend some time with your families and enjoy every precious moment with them after all, being thankful for family is what it's all about. If your a Hilltopper or perhaps a Raider fan, player, parent or coach, there should be plenty to be thankful for this holiday season and with one game still to play, a good reason to show it as both Joliet Catholic and Bolingbrook will be competing for a 5A and 8A IHSA state football championship on Saturday.

While as exciting as that news is, the winter sport season has already begun with basketball, wrestling and bowling all taking center stage this week as each sport begins the long trip ahead in hopes of following our area teams downstate and making their championship dreams come true. Be thankful for the opportunity to compete which sometimes is enough.

When I sat down to write this column I too honestly struggled a bit to find something to be thankful for after another tough year financially as the economy continues to throw uppercuts like a heavy weight champion going in for the knock out. Being knocked down several times throughout the year has kept even the most optimistic of us on the canvas longer than anticipated but we collectively rise up bruised, battered but standing without the thought of giving up. Personally the past year has been one of physical and mental challenges that seemingly has had me reaching for the ropes to help stay upright. I wonder what would have happened if those ropes weren't there to provide leverage in an otherwise unstable moment in time.

While my list of complaints rivals my list to Santa, I am so very thankful this year for those who have been in my corner and did what they could to keep me in the fight. Just tossing a wet sponge in my face, icing down the bruises and guiding me to stay alert has been all the difference because thanks to my friends and family when the bell rang for the next round despite being a bit tired, I rose for it with my gloves up and that is worth much more than any thanks I can express.

This holiday season I give thanks to friends, and family for tolerating this seasoned sports writer and the long hours associated with my reports that often steal more time than I am able to give from those very people I do it for. I am thankful for my many thousands of readers who take time to see or read a story from my position each week and find their way to the pages of the NEST that showcase some of the best athletic talents in the state.

Make sure to take a moment to give thanks for having it just a little better than the next person and you may find that no matter where you are, all is well.
