Wow! There are only two weeks left of 2011 and the just like that we flip into a new year. Perhaps the biggest news of the coming holiday season is the new 16-team boys varsity basketball tournament, the Romeoville Christmas Classic (December 26th thru December 29th 2011) in which teams like Joliet Catholic Academy, Plainfield Central and Romeoville will all play for the coveted tournament championship trophy awaiting the winner.

Sponsored in part by McDonalds Corp., Citgo Corp., Kelly Nissan, the Village of Romeoville and others local companies and groups, the tournament has drawn teams from all over the Northern part of the state including 6 school from Chicago for the inaugural event which is sure to be a crowd pleaser for all the basketball fans in the area as teams gear up for another year ending run and hopefully come out the other side and into the new year with a run towards the next IHSA state champion.

With games starting at 9am each day throughout the tournament, I find it to be a great place to set up shop and get the scoop for everyone of our readers. All cozy with my cameras and recording device in hand I can think of no more perfect place to be as a local sports writer than inside a gymnasium reporting on local talents. To be honest, it beats covering skiing or worse yet ice fishing as I am not a big fan of cold and snow and knowing I will be indoors for the holidays is like an early present.

I am quite sure that many of you will be happy to see the holiday shopping season go but as we all rush to get the final shopping trips done and make our way through the maze of sale flyers that thankfully clutter our newspapers, remember to take time to schedule a game and cheer on our local kids who bring life into the season.

With so much emphasis on acknowledging our faiths and celebrating the past year as it fades into memory, I hope we all will take a moment to show gratitude for our made journeys in the past year and finish the year well. Good luck to all you who are still searching for that hard to get gift and if it doesn't come through just know that whoever you are shopping for likely doesn't care as long as they know you did.
