ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Football hmmm... the lights, the smell of the turf, cheerleaders, band, roaring fans and oh yes the concession stand was just as I remembered it. I had a lot of changes in my life so my first game this season was a little bittersweet for me for I lost my partner earlier this year my wife Janice who passed suddenly. She was the one holding the bag for me in my previous seasons so it made this season's opener a bit different.

Last Friday night my first assignment was traveling to Mustang country home of the Downers Grove South Mustangs and wow the last time I was near that field was I suppose 1979 when at the time I was holding a tuba go figure. The game started with South Elgin driving the field and fumbling on the 2-yard line. that's when I got my first glimpse of Mustang senior tailback Josh Williams who showed off his stuff on the first play from scrimmage a 31-yard sweep en route to a 334-yard rushing night.

I got tired watching the young man run, he was high stepping over people moving through the South Elgin defense and impressing me with his ability to take a hit as well as dish it out. Williams is an "in your face get out of my way or I’m going to run you over and make you look silly" kind of back. to add to his talents was an impressive Mustang offensive line that opened gaping holes for Williams to dart through.

Defensively Downers South played with a "bend don’t break attitude" and their special teams looked stout led by their place kicker who has a leg. I believe they are the team to beat in their conference, Addison Trail will be a great test but if they play with the intesity they had in the opener this team will be tough to beat.

My trip to Downers South for the season opener was a great experience and I hope the Rooster gives me the assignment to go back. This Friday I’m going to see Lincoln Way West host Crete Monee and both teams will be hunting for a 2-0 record and a crucial victory before conference play begins in week 3. I’m taken the camera there if that’s not the game of the week well then I making a command decision and making it the game of the week so the people who run the concession stand put 2 hot dogs and a diet pop to the side Big Tone is coming for the show!

Have a fantastic week until we speak again be nice to one and other!
