The Plainfield East Bengals notched their first Holiday Tournament championship last Thursday night and improved to an unblemished 11-0 record after coming from behind and beating Washington High (8-4) 54-50 in the 47th annual Pekin Insurance Holiday Classic at Dawson Hawkins Gym at downstate Pekin High School.

Plainfield East is the newest of area schools and has only played varsity athletics for three seasons but whose athletes have quickly made a name for the Bengals in the SPC and across the state. The basketball program built by 3rd year coach Branden Adkins is enjoying the best start of any East athletic program and has exploded on the scene with experienced players who have rose to every challenge faced this season.

In the championship game, the Bengals trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half after Washington shot 62% from the field and whose defense limited East to only 15 points in the opening half heading into the half with a 27-15 advantage over the Bengals.

Plainfield roared back and too the lead entering the fourth quarter 40-39 on a three point bucket from Mack Brown. The quarter seesawed back in forth in the quarter with Plainfield going up for good with just less than a minute to play 51-50 when Deontre Brown drained a three pointer and knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the victory.
Austin Robinson led East with 13 points, center Brian Bennett added 11 and Jawan Straughter chipped in 12 points in the win.

With the SPC conference schedule left before the IHSA state tournament, it is Plainfield East who has made the biggest statement for supremacy in the area. A post season run is very possible with the well coached and balanced team of East if the can navigate the SPC and earn a favorable seed in March.
