Former Lewis University pitcher Joey Gradney (Rantoul, Ill./Rantoul/Cleveland State) has signed a professional contract with the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League.

The Frontier League is a professional independent baseball league with 12 teams in the Midwest. The Riverhawks were founded in 2002. They play at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.

Gradney compiled a 4.18 ERA and 3-5 record over 51.2 innings for the Flyers in 2011. He was third on the team with 41 strikeouts.

“I think this is a tremendous opportunity for Joey and I am really happy to see him get a chance at the professional level,” Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. “I feel Joey’s competitiveness and skill set should allow him to have success in the Frontier League. He really took advantage of his one year at Lewis and I have no doubts he will work hard on and off the field in representing himself and Lewis University in a first class manner in professional baseball.”

Gradney is the 68th Flyer in school history to sign a professional baseball contract.

He has made two appearances for the Riverhawks this season. He has allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings.

He is joined on the Riverhawks by former Flyer Joe Scumaci. Scumaci was an All-GLVC and All-Region performer for Lewis during the 2009 and 2010 seasons.
