Week one is in the books and what a great week it was!

In a bit of a shocker, #2 Providence opened their season with a showcase contest at Soldier Field against Morgan Park in a game many thought would be a Celtic victory. After their first possession, Providence looked strong when senior running back Cody Weaver capped a 43 yard drive with a 2 yard score and a 7-0 lead. A special teams mistake that gave the Mustangs the ball back after a punted ball bounced off the leg of a Celtic cost Providence dearly when Mustangs back senior tailback Devone Williams scored from a yard out and then took in a two point conversion taking an 8-7 lead. Both teams played stellar defense but the Celtics broke twice in before halftime when midway through the 2nd Mustang junior DaeShaun Hurley broke off a 35 yard scoring run followed by another Williams two point conversion which extended the Mustang lead to 16-7 before the half. The fact that Mustang coach Lexie Spurlock was successful going for two point conversions on both scores proved to be the difference as the Celtics fell to Morgan Park 16-14 proving the old adage “any given Sunday”.

Hinsdale South opened their season against Romeoville at home, well a temporary home at Hinsdale Centrals facility as a new turf field for the Hornets wasn’t fully completed for their home opener. The field may not have been ready to play but the Hornets was their offense exploded scoring 41 points on Romeoville’s defense in. Hinsdale’s junior running back tandem of Keonte Hall and Kaylen Williams made the Spartan defense look bad, Williams ripped off touchdown runs of 44, 6 and 71 yards allowing the Hornets to stay one step ahead of the Spartans all night. South’s quarterback senior Jackson Panice hooked up with senior Chris Chacko moments after a Spartan score in the third quarter with an 80 yard bomb that seem to take the wind out of Spartan sails.

Joliet West took the field for the first time in over a decade as the Tigers while a filled stadium cheered on their team in gold and black. In the early going however, Jacob ate up clock moving the ball downfield and scoring with just over 5 minutes to play on a running back 5 yard dive from Caz Zyks to open the scoring. The Tigers managed only two drives in the first half ending a good scoring opportunity with an interception at the goal line. Trailing 13-0, the Tigers needed to change the momentum and did so with an 88 yard kick return to open the 2nd half by senior John Smith. Joliet quarterback Malcolm Allen was picked twice in the game but was a threat every time he touched the ball hitting junior Danny Dorsey for a 24 yard strike in the third to draw within 6 points of the lead. Jacobs running attack proved to be too much for the Tigers as they went on to win comfortably 34-13 dashing hopes of a quick start for Joliet West.

The Downers Grove North Trojans had hoped to get their season off to a good start at home against #12 Lockport and change their fortunes after a 1-8 2009 season but for fans, the season opener didn’t provide a win for the home crowd. Porter running back Dan Holman chewed up yardage by the down markers in route to a 42-20 win over the Trojans. For Lockport every win is critical and has playoff implications especially winning games they should as they did with their season opener this evening. Lockport will face off against Oak Lawn Richards on the road next Friday night, game time 7pm.

Oswego East is a program that is still in a rebuilding mode but Benet Academy made the Wolves look like they were back at square on after a 34-0 drudging Friday night in Lisle.
Benet quarterback T.J. Rickert lit up East completing 14 of 19 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 60 yards on 8 carries scoring two touchdowns with his legs in the game. For Oswego East, the season opener left many questions for their coaching staff who must now prepare for a tough Larkin team next Friday night at home, game time 7pm.

Joliet Catholic opened their season much differently than how they ended it last season with a 21-7 win over Montini Friday night as the Hilltopper’s did more than show off their new turf field in front of the approximate 4000 fans in attendance. Joliet jumped out front early in the 1st quarter behind Illinois bound tailback Josh Ferguson who rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game with cramps. Hilltopper sophomore running back Ty Isaac stepped up and rushed for 159 yards on 20 carries and the player of the game for Joliet, senior quarterback Breshion Tucker went 5-7 for 80 yards and two touchdown strikes in the air while adding 34 yards on the ground. Joliet could have put the game away twice in the second half but fumbled in both situations allowing the Broncos to hang around until late in the 4th. Joliet will host #2 Providence at Joliet Memorial stadium next Friday night 7:00pm.

I spent the past week visiting prep football practices all over the area as teams prepare for the start of football season next week. The universal feeling I experienced after visiting with coaching staffs and players at several schools was undoubtedly optimism. As athletes battled through some very warm conditions and coaches showed early signs of horse throats last week it was obvious that they were all motivated regardless of the thermometer reading. It’s football, it’s August and it’s an expected challenge for anyone daring enough to put on pads that test their physical and intellectual skills. Some will say, football above all o...
